Discover the art of Ikebana — Japanese flower arranging, where every stem tells a story of balance, beauty, and calm.
To create those graceful displays, you’ll need the secret tool of the masters — the spiky frog (also known as a kenzan).
These sturdy metal bases hold each flower perfectly in place, letting you design natural, minimalist arrangements that last.
Simple. Stylish. Timeless.
In 2019 I did a flower arranging course in Kyoto, Japan and they expressed high importance in following this composition of the stems. You can flourish around the stems but there needs to be a 40 degree stem to represent the Earth, a 10 degree stem to represent Heaven and 70 degree stem to represent Human.
What i love about this type of flower arranging is that how amateur you are... it always looks quite striking and good. Following the simple degree rules also gives you a great, easy outline to follow so you aren't just staring at it blankly!
The steel frog then can sit in a shallow bowl of water. Another bonus to this type of arranging is that you don't need that many stems of flowers! So you can have many around the house sparkling little pops of joy as you are turning a corner.

Expertly crafted in Japan, this durable kenzan features sharp brass pins set into a solid, weighted lead base, allowing stems of all types—woody branches, delicate blooms, or grasses—to stand exactly where you place them. The removable rubber ring protects your dish or vase and prevents slipping during use. We get ours from Niwaki.
